Business in Barry As Barry entered the 20th century, the coal trade provided a huge boost to Barry docks and railway. The No.1 dock was completed in 1889, and the No.2 dock in 1898. In 1913 coal exports from Barry were running at 11 million tons. Barry was thriving, and businesses to support this growth were also thriving.   Sadly, the largest single employer in Barry is now the Vale of Glamorgan County Borough Council.   As we enter the 21st century, the business face of Barry has changed dramatically. The heavy industries have gone. Automation means that the chemical plants located to the east of Barry no longer employ huge numbers of staff. Shops have to contend with large out-of town superstores, and the traditional corner shop is all but extinct.
