Ho
Hum
it's that time of year again!
Love it or loathe it, you can't ignore Christmas, especially if you
have children!
Special events at Christmas for children in Barry and the area include...
Holton Road Christmas Lights are due to
be switched on at 4pm on Thursday 25th November.
A French Market will be running between Friday 17th December
and Sunday 19th December 2004, with some 26 stalls, and produce from
all over France.
And for the youngsters, a funfair will be operating on King
Square every weekend until Christmas, and from 17th December, will be
there for the week

Cowbridge Christmas Lights - On Friday,
26th November Cowbridge will be switching on their Christmas
Lights with Derek 'The Weatherman" Brockway (and he
should be able to arrange a break in the rain!).
The show starts at 6pm, there will be live music from PHIXX
and local band DV8, a Carol Idol Competition, and the
Cowbridge Choral Society. Bridge FM will be providing live radio
coverage. The evening will be rounded off with a fireworks display.
High Street Christmas Lights
If you've been down to High Street recently you may have noticed that
Santa's little helpers (and some not so small ones as well!) have
been busy decorating the street with many wonderful new animated
Christmas lights.
Alun Jones, chairman of High Street Traders Association Ltd. said -
"We've spent over £4,000 on new lights for this year and I
can confidently say that this year we have a fantastic display.
Following the huge success of our Summer Festival we've decided to
hold a Street Christmas Fayre that will coincide with the switching
on of our breathtaking lights.
On Saturday 27th November at 3pm we are closing the street
ready to hold a Christmas Fayre the like of which has yet to be seen
in this part of Wales. Ysgol Sant Baruc Cymraeg will start the event
with a selection of Christmas carols, followed by an afternoon packed
with entertainment for all the family. Barry Male Voice Choir will be
in fine voice, a carnival atmosphere will be provided by the Vale of
Glamorgan Steel Band, and we are privileged to have the Vale's own
BRIDGE FM who will be hosting a Roadshow with live music to suit all
tastes. There will be stall holders from various charities and plenty
of children's entertainment including stilt walkers, fire eaters and
even a fire engine for inquisitive little children! As always hot
food and drinks will be on offer by many traders to keep out the
winter chill.
The climax of the afternoons entertainment will be the GRAND
SWITCH ON at 5.30pm performed by none other than Father Christmas
and a few of his little helpers."
Also starting at the "Switch On" look out for shops
participating in a Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Competition to be
run until 17th December.
The competition is open to all ages.
So for a fantastic afternoon of festive family fun make sure you are
in High Street on Saturday 27th November.

Santa and his Reindeer will be visiting Cowbridge
on Sunday 28th November. Shops will be open all day from about
10am, and Santa is due at 12 noon. After the parade, you can see
Santa in his grotto. There will also be live music from the Carol
Idol competition and local choirs!
There's normally a bucket collection for charity, so take your spare change!

Santa Specials will be run by The
Barry Steam Railway Company in the weekends running up to Christmas.
The 2004 dates are -
December 4th and 5th,
December 11th and 12th,
December 18th and 19th, and
December 21st, 22nd and 23rd
Trains run on the hour between 10am and 3pm
Ticket prices are -
Adult £4
Child £5 (including a present)
Family (2 adults + 2 children) £15
Refreshments are available at the station.
Warm clothing is advised! And a camera!
Please ring 01446 748816 (10am - 4pm) for further details.
The Christmas Spirit
There are plenty of householders around the town who go crazy with
the decorations - nowadays you need to have something attached to the
top of the chimney to be special!

Some of these displays have collection boxes for charity - the
Children's Hospital for Wales being a favourite. So again, when you
take the kids to see the lights, take your loose change!
